Teased Up and Let Loose

Lately, as my hair grows longer and increasingly disheveled in the weeks following a hair appointment, I have taken to wearing it partially pulled back in a large barrette. As a little girl, the barrette was an absolute grooming necessity, if I was to look presentable and tame my thick golden brown locks in anything other than a hastily made ponytail. I remember having a large closet hanging barrette organizer, which housed the myriad pieces in a cascade, some plastic, some fabric bows, some intricately woven neon shoelaces. More recently, I use the barrette to pull back my bangs when they start irritatingly stabbing my eyes, but I had forgotten the effortless elegance of pulling up half of my hair, and letting the rest lay loose across my shoulders and back. Particularly in the mornings when I cannot muster the energy to style and blow dry, a quick hair fix is so welcome.
