Canadian Thanksgiving: Silver and Navy Tunic

The other evening, I was graciously invited to indulge in the delicacies of Canadian Thanksgiving by a family friend, a kind and generous woman who was a nurse with my mother when they were both about my age; she, along with her husband and her youngest daughter, coincidentally live here in my sleepy suburban town. Having been quite busy lately with certain professional pursuits, attempting to catch my breath from travel and bleary eyes from laptop hypnosis, the prospect of eating a large, home-cooked meal, not prepared by myself, was quite thrilling. Like traditional Thanksgiving in November here in the Union, the Canadian meal features turkey, mashed potatoes, yams and apples, green beans, dressing, and cranberry sauce.

With the weather being so wild and variable, I was able to wear this silver, emerald, and navy blue silk tunic, pairing it with a pair of deep navy cotton leggings. This tunic was designed by Amanda Uprichard, and I discovered it at one of my favorite consignment shops, tags still prominently attached; originally priced at 350$, I paid something in the range of 20$.

Unfortunately, the tunic is a bit loose, a size or two above what I would normally wear; this is ameliorated with a thick leather belt. This belt is a wonderfully warm ivory-camel tone, which is neutral yet unique, and features a great gold-emblazoned buckle.

After the delicious and decadent Sunday evening meal, I was thankful that this tunic is so loose; rarely can I abstain from a plate of heaping seconds.

This tunic is almost dress-length, hitting a bit above the knee; in the warmer summer months, it could be easily worn without tights or leggings.

I carried my new cream wicker handbag, a treasure procured from a small vintage shop in Providence during my weekend trip earlier in the season. I have a premonition that this handbag will become a prominent staple of my outfits in the coming months.

I have been wearing pearl earrings and this pearl bracelet so regularly the past few weeks, I wonder if I am having subconscious yearnings for my private prep school uniform days, an era when the only adornments available and permissible within the strict attire coda were pearls and bows. Our uniform consisted on a plain a-line cobalt blue skirt and a basic collared white shirt, the school logo embroidered in red. For the creative soul, accessories were like blood, a vital force, necessary and vibrant. The bracelet was also found in a separate small vintage boutique up north in Providence.

In a moment of fortunate and opportune bargain hunting, at my local TJ Maxx, I found these beautiful Cole Haan heeled sandals; though it was the end of the summer season, I have found ample opportunities so far to wear and display them. The leather surprisingly matches the leather of my belt.

Gold and pearl earrings, to match the bracelet.
