Comfort Food Season

This past weekend was spent visiting with my family in New York; with the baby still being very young and quite small, my sister and her husband did not want to travel down south for the impending Christmas holiday. Some discussions and quick planning resulted in a weekend together to celebrate early Christmas, and beautiful Winona, this past weekend. My younger brother was finished exams, and was able to join my parents on the trip up to the grand city.

Unfortunately, absolute bitter cold decided to also pay a visit this weekend, a to-be-expected for this season surprise that I was not at all prepared for. I spent the past two days donning a water-proof camel trench coat. Even the seams of my teeth and gums were frigidly cold. As this weather sets in, my propensity to laze about in bed, either reading or watching films, increases exponentially; coupled with that is the desire to consume warming and delicious foods.

Throughout the summer and fall months, I frequented my local farmer's market for produce, eggs, and other delights, such as these cheese and potato pierogis, which I lightly fried with onions and sweet sausage. The locally produced and sold pierogis were something that I did not discover until one of my last visits this past fall, and I regret my reticence with entertaining my German Polish heritage terribly. Our town market closes at some point in the middle of November; I envy small college towns, like Ithaca and Providence, that are able to indulge in crafted foods and local produce throughout the year.

Most likely, I will be scouring the aisles of my local grocery stores for some pierogis for the winter months, to accompany my thick collection of Lydia Davis and growing list of should-see and must-see movies.
